Cabinet Making: Three Important Factors to Consider

by Greg Keefer

Cabinet making is an art form that's all but lost in the mass production market of modern cabinetry. Particle board and plywood often replace solid hardwoods, and staples and tacks make dovetail connections nearly obsolete. With a little care, you can still create beautiful and original cabinets that will last for generations to come. But, doing so can be a big project for the DIYer.

Is cabinet making for you? Here are some things to consider:

  • Cost:If you plan to use the cheapest materials, you may as well buy ready-to-install cabinets. Budget purchases have their place, but not when making cabinets. Prepare to pay prevailing--and fluctuating--prices for quality wood, such as oak, cherry, and walnut. Cedar and well-inspected pine can provide the basis for a great looking set of cabinets, but these woods won't fit every decor.
  • Time: Take care when undertaking a project that has a set deadline. Expect to take custom measurements, fine-tune your power and hand tools, and devote more time than you might imagine if you want that magic finish. Give yourself a lot of wiggle room when setting up your timetable.
  • Required tools: If you plan to create authentic wood cabinets, you'll need a wide variety of tools like a router, planer, sander, table saw, and a host of other wood-working necessities. If you're an inexperienced cabinet maker, begin your project with written plans that list the necessary tools for the type and style of cabinets you're creating.

Know what you're getting into. Then, enjoy yourself. Cabinet making can be a rewarding experience and a great way to add beauty and value to your home.
