Here are five things to keep in mind when choosing a cabinet maker:

  • Reputation: Pick a skilled contractor or carpenter with a good reputation. In urban areas, this is tricky since you may not know anyone who has used the services of local cabinet makers. In a small community, this shouldn't be a problem because word of mouth travels fast about local talent.
  • References: Ask the cabinet makers you're considering to give you a couple of references. Carpenters with nothing to hide will be forthcoming. If a woodworker doesn't want to give you the names of customers, there's probably a reason.
  • Experience: A woodworker who's an artisan is the ideal cabinet maker to hire. Inquire about the contractor's actual experience, how many years he's been making cabinets, and if he's experienced in the type of cabinetry you want. A big heart and great smile doesn't mean he knows how to build cabinets.
  • Shopping: Woodworkers list their services in many places. Check the local yellow pages and newspaper classified sections under topics such as "cabinets" and "woodworkers." Look at online listings in your area. Ask home improvement store employees and lumber yards for recommendations.
  • Written estimates: Get an estimate in writing. Estimates aren't necessarily set in stone, but they can give you an idea of what your new wood cabinets will to cost.

Choosing the right cabinet maker is the most important decision you'll make when building new wood cabinets. With the right woodworker on the job, your worries are over.
