Finding a Reliable Source for Custom Cabinetry
by Jessica Santina
By now you know some of the basics of finding and selecting a qualified professional to handle your custom cabinetry job. But despite doing your research, there are still some contractors out there who are looking to make a quick buck. While most professionals are exactly that, in the current economic climate there may be some unscrupulous individuals out there looking to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners.
Here are some warning signs that the cabinet maker you're considering isn't on the up and up:
- You get what you pay for with cheap kitchen cabinets. We're all looking for the low bid, but if your cabinet maker quotes you significantly less than everyone else, those cheap kitchen cabinets aren't likely to be of good quality.
- Beware the "daily special." The price you pay for cabinets on Monday shouldn't be different on Wednesday. Watch out for anyone who tells you that you qualify for a "special low rate" or that pressures you to take advantage of a "today-only" deal.
- Avoid up-front payments. In the case of custom cabinetry, a deposit is usually required in order for the contractor to purchase materials. But paperwork should support this. You should never have to pay for an entire cabinet-making job up front. Also avoid anyone who insists on payment in cash.
- Make sure they're accessible. If the contact information for the cabinet maker seems out of date, or if you have trouble getting responses to your requests, whether they're for references or project clarification, you're may be dealing with a nonprofessional.
Custom cabinetry can add tremendous value and utility to your home, but only if it's done by the right person.
