An Easy Fix for Sticky Cabinet Doors

by Greg Keefer

There are various reasons cabinet doors stick or will no longer close. The worst case scenario is that the house might have settled and the frames are no longer squared. More commonly the problem is that the hinges need adjusting or screws are loose or missing.

Fixing Cabinet Doors with Loose Screws or Hinges

Homeowners can easily fix cabinet doors with these problems.

  • Tools you'll need. You'll need a drill and bit, screwdriver, wood putty, and a tape measure. No special tools are needed.
  • Tighten existing screws and replace missing ones. This might realign the doors all by itself. If screw holes are worn and no longer holding the screws, there are a couple things to try. The first is to fill the holes with wood filler, let them dry thoroughly, and then reinsert the screws. If the door is under tension or constant use this won't be a permanent solution. Another temporary fix is to reinsert the screws along with part of a toothpick. Surprisingly the toothpick should hold for a long time to come.
  • Hinge replacement on cabinet doors. Damaged hinges need to be replaced. Fill in old screw holes with wood putty and stain the putty after it's thoroughly dry. The holes are nearly impossible to hide but should be covered by the hinge plates once they're been repositioned. If you have adjustable hinges, try loosening and then readjusting them. Older cabinet doors may be heavier than the standard new construction doors and require heavier hinges.

When cabinet doors are sticky or no longer close try the easy solutions first. The screws or the hinges are usually the problem and are much easier to work with than sagging frames or a sinking house.
