Kitchen Cabinets Are Key to Design
To add a vintage look to a kitchen, start by selecting kitchen cabinet styles that fit the period. Some traditional styles in cabinet doors and drawer fronts include:

  • Arched tops that add dimension to the cabinets.
  • Raised panels.
  • Warm and textured woods such as oak and cherry.

Also look for cabinet details such as:

  • Bead board panels on the side of the cabinet or inside the cabinet wall.
  • Open shelving to display cookbooks and knick knacks.
  • Curtains to cover shelving and add a farmhouse look.
  • Island cabinets that feature furniture styling, such as claw foot legs, molding, and special carvings.

Consider a Vintage Kitchen Sink
There are many kitchen sink styles that are reminiscent of a bygone era. If you’re planning to replace your sink while refacing the cabinets, try these styles:

  • A large, two-bowl cast iron sink. Cast iron sinks are durable and add a warm, traditional feel to a room. They typically come in white and cream, which go with any kitchen design.
  • A farm sink with an exposed front, just like in grandma’s old farmhouse. Most of these sinks are made of:
    • Porcelain
    • Stainless steel
    • Copper
    • Fireclay.
  • An apron-front sink. Also very decorative, apron-front sinks can feature interesting etched or raised designs on the side that is exposed.

Cabinet Hardware, the Finishing Touch
There are many old-fashioned knobs and pulls that can dress up your newly refaced cabinets. When trying to add a vintage look, try white porcelain with floral designs, rustic wrought iron or classic aged brass. The hardware can be as delicate or ornate as you like, depending on your kitchen design.

There are many ways to recreate an old-fashioned kitchen, from hardware to the kitchen sink and the cabinets. As you plan a cabinet refacing, ask the contractor for ideas. Then sprinkle some vintage touches around the room.
