Choose Kitchen Cabinets for a Healthy Home

by Shannon Dauphin

Choosing kitchen cabinets for your home is always a matter of styles, colors, size, and cabinet prices. But there are other considerations about how to design a kitchen, such as the way the cabinets are built. Harmful chemicals can leach from certain woods or pressed board, and paints can contain chemicals, as well.

Choosing Green Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets that are friendly to the environment can be friendly to your family's health, too. Here's what you should look for to ensure your kitchen cabinets are as safe for your family as possible:

  • Many adhesives contain formaldehyde. Avoid this by opting for fiberboard made without formaldehyde, and ask if your custom cabinets can be made with water-based adhesives.
  • Many paints are loaded with volatile organic compounds (VOC). Choose a low-VOC paint to ensure that there is minimal off-gassing from your cabinets in years to come.
  • Always choose sustainable woods. Products like bamboo are attractive options that might cost a bit more, but they also allow you to do your part in helping out the environment.
  • Salvage what you can. Rather than buying new products, salvage what you can, as long as the items don't cause health problems in the long run. Salvaged glass pulls for your cabinets and drawers are a good example.
  • Not ready to buy kitchen cabinets? Reface your old cabinets by stripping off all the paint and varnish, and refinishing them with a low-VOC paint or a low-VOC stain that enhances the natural beauty.

Choosing kitchen cabinets with an eye toward the environment and your family's good health is one of the keys to turning your so-so kitchen into an eco-friendly makeover.
