While country kitchen designs incorporate natural elements with some history thrown in, they don't have to be completely rustic or true to one particular period. Instead, think of a country kitchen as creating a family-friendly environment with some period detail.
A kitchen can have thoroughly modern appliances and features, but also have a "countrified" feel when the appliances blend in seamlessly with the cabinetry. Dishwashers and refrigerators can have custom-made cabinet fronts, and a flat top stove can be placed unobtrusively in the corner of the room.
A country kitchen can make good use of natural materials in an island, for example using richly stained tongue-and-groove wood topped by a smooth granite countertop. Hardwood floors throughout add warmth to any country kitchen design. Details like a rooster on the countertop and print curtains with matching wallpaper can echo colors found in the island and cabinets.
