The phrase "modern kitchens" might bring to mind the Jetsons' Food-a-Rac-a-Cycle, but unlike Jane and George Jetson (and Rosie the robot maid!), owners of today's modern kitchens cook. The cornerstone of modern kitchen designs is state-of-the art appliances. The sleek style of stainless steel reflects appliances' increased functionality. Over-the-stove exhaust systems really do suck up smoke; mini wine refrigerators ensure the presence of chilled wine; ovens cook evenly; islands provide excellent places to chop.
All this functionality does not negate beauty. Natural woods, cool tones, stone, and marble found in modern kitchen designs go beyond useful: they look and feel wonderful. And modern kitchens leave plenty of choice: floors can be perfectly polished hardwood or cool marble; tiles can become backsplash or entire walls; your island can have stools or not. Eventually, the Food-a-Rac-a-Cycle might even be an option - but how much fun would it be if cooking meant pushing a button or two?
