by Susanne Clemenz

Need some discount cabinetry for a bedroom-turned-art-studio, a rental unit, or to update your kitchen to sell your home? Why not trade sweat equity for a better grade of homeowner-assembled cabinets, or find sources for pre-assembled discount cabinetry?

The hardware systems, drawings, and instructions for assembling discount cabinetry are usually quite clear and easy to follow, but it doesn't hurt to secure an assistant to help you align cabinet pieces and hardware--and maybe interpret the assembly instructions, just in case. Now start shopping!

Things to Compare in Discount Cabinetry Pricing

As with any cabinets, you'll want to do your homework when comparing prices. Here are some things to be aware of:

  • Compare construction materials. Plywood is more durable than fiberboard, and five-eighths inch fiberboard is preferable to one-quarter inch. Are doors, drawers and case faces wood or fiberboard?
  • Get quotes for assembly prices and shipping costs. Having cabinets assembled by an online supplier may result in bigger shipping charges. Sometimes shipping is free if the order is over a certain amount.

Unassembled Cabinets

Home Depot offers Classics brand 30" x 30" upper cabinet with raised panel doors and white satin finish for about $124. Ikea has a 30" x 30" birch upper cabinet with many different door styles for about $115, and help with assembly is available. But don't forget to research other local discount cabinet companies and online sources. Kitchen Cabinet Depot, for example, offers choices of style, wood, and finish, with a 30" x 30" upper oak cabinet priced at about $130.

Finishing Assembled Cabinets

If you're purchasing locally, you may save more by finishing your own cabinets than by assembling them. You can also match existing stain or paint colors easily. Shop at unfinished furniture stores or home building supply stores for discount cabinetry. Home Depot has an unfinished oak upper cabinet by Continental, 30" x 30" inches, for about $85.

Once you've made your purchase and taken possession of your discount cabinetry, call your assistant, order in a pizza, and enjoy assembling or finishing your new cabinets.
