Painting kitchen cabinets is a relatively simple process you can easily master. Problem is, results can vary from beautifully colored cabinets to those that fall far short.

Here are seven common sense painting tips to help you achieve the results you want:

  1. Use good paint: A quality oil- or water-based paint is worth its weight in gold. The price tag generally follows the paint quality upward as it gets better. For best results, invest in the best paint you can afford. Good paint covers well, requires fewer coats, and dries with minimal brush strokes.
  2. Good brushes save work: A brush designed for the paint you're using applies paint evenly. Throw-away brushes create more work in the long run, an extra coat of paint, and touch-up headaches.
  3. Small brushes for small spaces: Choose a small brush for those inside corners and decorative work. Smaller brushes are easier to control, help you avoid the tendency to load the brush with paint, and allow access to spots larger brushes can't reach.
  4. Allow enough time: Painting kitchen cabinets can't be rushed. Allow yourself enough time to do the project right, so you save money and avoid the mistakes a rush job inevitably creates.
  5. Use painter's tape: Tight corners and edges adjacent to other surfaces requires an exceptionally steady hand. Tape off adjoining walls, wallpaper, and other surfaces to avoid unnecessary clean-up.
  6. Rest breaks: Fatigue hurts painting accuracy. Rest your painting arm every half hour or so.
  7. Paint kitchen cabinets in good light: Daylight is best, but, otherwise, paint when you can see your mistakes and uneven application. Painting kitchen cabinets in poor light invites a shock or two in the morning.

A little painting common sense saves the day. Follow these simple tips for a great looking set of kitchen cabinets.
