Kitchen Cabinet Doors Will Not Stay Closed

Q: I have oak cabinets that are about 18 years old. For some reason, the doors no longer stay shut. There is no visible warping. The magnets appear to touch and the doors and frames are level. I need some advice.

A: These doors don’t sound like self closing doors and, being that old, probably aren’t. It is possible that the magnets have de-magnetized. You might just need new ones.

They might also just need adjusting, since magnets are usually installed with screws that have extra long holes to allow some moving. Magnets are cheap and easy to replace and I would try this first. If you still have problems after that, you may need to replace the hinges as well, which is also inexpensive.
