Small Kitchen Remodeling Ideas: Three Bold Ways to Steal Space

by Susanne Clemenz

Small kitchens are fine if you're able to cook and entertain in close quarters. But, if your kitchen feels claustrophobic, these three small kitchen remodeling ideas can increase both space and resale appeal.

Steal Some Space for Expansion

  1. Living room: Steal some space from the adjoining living room wall. Move the whole wall, if possible. Or, move just enough to add a roomy pantry that absorbs overflow, especially from countertops. In the living room, use tall bookcases rather than side-by-sides. Hang a flat-screen TV over the fireplace or eliminate the fireplace in favor of a stacked entertainment center. Eliminate a window in favor of wall space. You get the idea.
  2. Dining room: Think of your present side-by-side kitchen and dining room as one big empty rectangle with no dividing walls. Redesign the space with all kitchen elements either along one wall, in an L-shape, or in an elongated C-shape. Place the dining room table parallel to the longest kitchen wall or snuggled into the L or C shape. Use remote-controlled, ceiling-mounted, pleated shades to hide clutter while dining. The shades can even be a luscious color that adds to your dining ambiance.
  3. Bedroom: If your kitchen adjoins a bedroom, steal a foot or two from the common wall, if possible. Or give up half of a six-foot wide closet. Make up for the lost space with some high overhead cupboards in the bedroom for off-season clothing or bedding storage.

Hiring a kitchen designer to help you achieve your small kitchen remodeling ideas is money well spent. Your bigger kitchen is lurking within your walls!
