The Bottom Layer of the Kitchen Remodeling "Cake"--Flooring

  • Kitchen flooring color choices are limited. Choose flooring first.
  • What new flooring types can improve maintenance?
  • Is existing flooring lighter, darker, or similar to your preference?
  • Compare retailers' installed costs for hardwood, wood laminate, vinyl, tile, etc.

The Second Layer --Cabinets

  • Kitchen remodeling plans usually include cabinet upgrades. Change colors and styles by refacing (less expensive) or replacing.
  • Do you have enough drawers? Enough cupboards?
  • Would you prefer roll-out shelves in the lower cupboards?
  • Want to add a kitchen island or pantry?
  • Are existing cabinets lighter, darker, or similar to your preference?

The "Filling"--Countertops and Backsplashes

  • At a retail kitchen showroom, compare all choices of countertop and backsplash materials. Bring photos or samples of flooring and cabinet choices.
  • Ask about durability, upkeep, and installation costs.

The Frosting--Walls

  • Ask about wallpaper removal if you're going from paper to paint.
  • Is your existing kitchen lighter, darker, or similar in brightness to your preference?
  • Do you prefer wall colors to contrast with other elements or be more monochromatic? Choose colors with all other samples present.

Candles on the Cake--Kitchen Lighting Ideas!

  • Choose both general room lighting and switched task lighting for work areas.
  • Make one light an accent with a special style choice.

Your completed lists create a recipe for your new kitchen--a feast for your eyes!
