  • The work triangle: The cooktop, sink, and refrigerator should form a triangle with no more than 4 to 9 feet on any side of the triangle. Place the dishwasher 24 inches away from an inside corner.
  • Clearances: Plan to accommodate wheelchair access. Leave room for mobility when an oven or dishwasher drawer is open.
  • Electrical: Kitchens are appliance- and task-intensive. Make sure your floor plan provides a way to conveniently run task lighting and multiple outlets.
  • Flooring: Favor impervious surfaces like tile or laminated hardwoods for easy cleanup. Scale the flooring creatively--larger tiles can give a more spacious look. Angled walls and small wall indentations cost more to build.
  • Plumbing: Group the sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator on the same wall or close by to save plumbing costs. If there is plumbing in an adjacent bathroom or garage wall, you can piggy-back on that. Adjustable-height sinks with no lower cabinets facilitate kids or wheelchair use.
  • Pantries: A wide, tall, shallow pantry closet provides better lighting and access than a deep one, unless you allow plenty of walking room inside.

As you can see, kitchen remodeling floor plans need to accommodate more than the room's beauty. Regardless of your budget, you can increase versatility and save costs with thoughtful planning. A kitchen design software program and a good designer are great allies in achieving a kitchen plan you can love.
