Kitchen Remodeling Tips: Solutions for Too Much Need, Too Little Money

by Susanne Clemenz

Money is tight everywhere these days, including for kitchen remodeling costs. Sure, $10,00 to $15,000 would solve most problems, but what could $3,500 do to give you some relief? Here's how to choose where to spend it.

"Safety First!" Is the Primary Kitchen Remodeling Tip

Yes, your chipped and stained porcelain sink looks awful, and the linoleum is worn through in spots. But that kitchen range with the sagging oven door, burners that don't work, a tricky pilot light, and oven temperatures that miss the mark can all be safety hazards. Out with the old, in with the new!

The top rack of your dishwasher that's always jumping the track may lead to tons of broken dishes, a broken door, and some nasty cuts and scrapes. And it's costing you money to run it, as today's dishwashers are amazingly quiet and energy efficient. A refrigerator that runs all the time, has a loose gasket, or keeps everything too warm or too cold is more money down the tubes.

Look for sales, do comparative shopping, and your $3,500 can replace all three kitchen appliances. You can enjoy reduced monthly utility bills, too. Find a store with slightly dented or scratched brand new appliances. If there's still a bit of money left, a wise kitchen remodeling tip is to do some preventative maintenance. Have a plumbing inspection done to make sure nothing's on the verge of flooding your kitchen. Do an electrical inspection to make sure switches and appliance connections are sound. This isn't the most glamorous kitchen remodel, but safety first--glamour next year!
