Physical Fixes for a Small Kitchen

  • Attach a hinged, fold-down counter top extension at the ends of cabinets. Leave room to walk by it when in use.
  • Think vertically! Install 4 to 10 inches of deep-lipped shelving on a blank wall. Use shallow shelves below and one deeper shelf above head level.
  • Add cabinets above existing cabinets for seldom-used items like party ware. Paint to match.
  • Add cabinets or open shelves above your breakfast bar, leaving enough room for two people to sit and see into the kitchen.
  • Small kitchen islands come in the form of wheeled carts with an enclosed cabinet underneath. Store it against a cabinet end or nearby blank wall.
  • Want a bolder kitchen remodeling idea? Expand the kitchen to encompass a small nearby dining area, and have all your dining be at a wrap-around breakfast bar.
  • Bump out an end wall and create a floor-to-ceiling pantry adjacent to a small window.

Visual Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

  • Make the kitchen lighter by painting your upper cabinets--either the entire cabinets, or just the doors. Paint the lowers too, if they're really dark.
  • Paint the walls a light color.
  • Replace the upper cabinet doors with glass doors so you see into the cabinets.
  • Minimize decorative clutter. Leave some open space!
  • Use strong vertical and horizontal lines in wallpaper or tile accents to draw the eye upward and outward.

Don't get frustrated with your small food preparation area. Choose some creative small kitchen remodeling ideas for both physical and visual extra space!
